overhead wires. He need not move. Instead, life passes him by: staring
back from shuttered eyes, swirling bits of detritus sewer bound at his
feet. The tunnel vision of misery expands inexorably into all unoccupied
space, creating a d
imensionless reality.

As he spoke she suddenly realized that the truth was not in the carefully

words, but in the spaces between them. In the words not chosen.
Absence was too vast to comprehend, but the words bracketed it, made it
readable. An image began to form. She reached over and turned on the radio.
